In the summer, the number of child injuries peak. While car accidents are consistently the number one cause of child injuries, drownings and product injuries are also common. While we trust the products which we and our children come into contact with, we often forget that in the blink of an eye, a defective product can cause severe, catastrophic injuries.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announces product recalls each day. However, many parents will never know that a child’s toy or product was recalled. Some retailers continue to sell recalled products. In fact, Burlington Coat Factory was just fined $1.5 million dollars for failing to disclose drawstrings in children’s clothing and selling recalled clothing.
Below are some recent child product recalls:
Child Beach Chairs
15,000 children’s folding beach chairs were recall last week due to a laceration hazard. The chairs have sharp metal rivets which could cause injury to children. These chairs were sold at Home Goods and other stores from June 2011 through June 2012. For more information, read the CPSC child beach chair recall notice.
Peg Perego Strollers
After receiving one report of an infant death and one report of near strangulation, the CPSC and Peg Perego is recalling 223,000 Venezia and Pliko-P3 strollers which were manufactured between 2004 and 2007. For more information, read the CPSC Peg Perego stroller recall notice.
Kolcraft Strollers
Over 5,000 Kolcraft strollers were recalled due to the potential for the front wheels to break off and nuts which hold the basket in place to detach. These nuts pose a choking hazard. They were sold at various retailers and online earlier this year. For more information, read the CPSC Kolcraft stroller recall notice.
Toddler Trampolines
8,000 small indoor trampolines designed for young children were recalled due to the potential for the handlebar to break off, posing a fall hazard to children. These trampolines were sold at specialty toy stores from January through March of this year. For more information, read the CPSC trampoline recall notice.
