Motorcycle accident injuries are often fatal. If not fatal, they tend to cause serious injuries, especially for older riders. In fact, a recent study confirmed that older riders (over the age of 39) tend to suffer more serious injuries than riders between the ages of 19 and 39. Even the most experienced motorcycle rider can find themselves in a situation where, due to no fault of their own, they are forced to take evasive action or worse, are struck by a car or truck. Even wearing protective gear and a helmet, a motorcycle rider may still suffer fractures, road rash, spine injuries and head injuries.
This infographic shows the prevalence of motorcycle accident injuries by body part, across the country. According to the CDC, between 2001 and 2008, leg/foot and head/neck injuries accounted for over 50% of all motorcycle accident injuries in the U.S. Upper body and arm and hand injuries accounted for nearly 40% of the injuries. In addition, the CDC reports that the highest death rates in the same period were among 20-24 year olds, followed by 25-29 year olds.
Motorcycle Accidents in Pennsylvania
We can certainly expect to see an increase in the number of motorcycle accidents which result in injuries, especially in Pennsylvania. That’s because the number of motorcycle licenses issued to Pennsylvania residents has increased by nearly 10,000 per year, over the last 10 years. Also, Pennsylvania’s motorcycle helmet law is very lax. In PA, there is a partial helmet requirement – only certain riders are required to wear their helmets. Read more about Pennsylvania’s motorcycle helmet law here. These two factors are likely to lead to increasing numbers of motorcycle accidents in Pennsylvania.
